INITIALISE COMBAT OVERLAY

ENEMY VESSELS IN ORBIT, PARACEL VI. III & VIII LEGION IDENT CODES CONFIRMED

Paracel VI Auspex Servitor 1C-22X

INTRODUCTION

No On the 22nd May 21 a 4TK Gaming the Legio Traitoris gaming group met up with a whopping 13,500pts per side (27,000pts total) to fight out the first game we’ve managed in over a year. This game would see brand new Book 9 Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Iron Hands and Raven Guard facing off against Book 9 Night Lords, Emperors Children and Daemons of the Ruinstorm in a tumultous and carnage battle.

HOUSE RULES

The Legio Traitoris Group play house rules that we feel adds a bit more fun the game and allows some more freely narrative army building. Namely these rules are:

  • Leviathan and Onslaught force organization charts are permitted.
  • Contrary to the normal and Rite of War specific Allied Force rules, you may take two separate Force Organisation chart detachments as a single “Army Group”. The separate Force Organisations within an Army Group operate as separate forces on the table, but may still target units within each force for psychic powers etc. Independent Characters may join units from within their own Force Organisation chart detachment, but not the other.
  • Each player may take up to two Lord of War choices in a single Force Organisation chart detachment, applying the 25% rule to that Organisation chart detachment. Those Lord of War choices that cannot fit into a single Force Organisation chart detachment and meet the 25% criteria must be taken as the second Force Organisation Chart detachment as Leviathan instead – this does not prohibit a Lord of War meeting the 25% rule in the first detachment.

Not many rules, but they work well for our group. Some of the rules might seem a little excessive or odd, but it ensures we see some varied armies and some special models from time to time. In the history of our group games we have always had close-call results so that’s proof the rules work well for us.

NARRATIVE

As always, the group games are built around a basic core narrative to bind the armies into the game. This is normaly incorporated into a larger campaign style game that plays out over the year. This iteration is a simple pick up game to break everyone back in – so the narrative is less important than normal.

Located within the Uttrus Mundi cluster, Paracel XI is one of eight Hive worlds. Each of these worlds hides an underground facility that has its own specialisation that aided the Great Crusade:

  • Paracel 1: Passive Defensive Systems Research.
  • Paracel II: Targeting Systems Research.
  • Paracel III: Ship Energy Weapons Research.
  • Paracel IV: Teleport Systems Research.
  • Paracel V: Armoured Vehicle Research.
  • Paracel VI: Xenos Weapons Research.
  • Paracel VII: Atomic Weapons Research.
  • Paracel VIII: Research Facility Central Command.

When the Warmaster set about dethroning the Emperor, the initial battles and the direct path of war led the Traitor forces away from Uttrus Mundi. Safe from immediate harm, Paracel VI switched from Xenos Weapons to Warp Research in an attempt to provide an answer to the daemonic forces that mustered at the Traitors cause.

Early on, the facility had successes in unlocking the ability to activate captured Aeldari Distort weapons; with the hulk of an Aeldari Phantom Titan taking up the huge central silo of the facility. The act caused huge instabilities as parts of the surrounding area were partially torn into the warp. Since then, no activations have occurred, with a new, custom firing range being developed that underlies the entire Hive above.

When the forces of the Warmaster breached into Beta Garmon, splinter forces began to raid Uttrus Mundi. Concerned that the facilities could not be replaced if lost, Rogal Dorn ordered that the Hives increase their defensive armament. A raiding fleet from the VIII Legion decimated an entire sector of Paracel VII overnight, attempting to force the hive world into dark compliance and resupply. In response, Paracel VII defences managed to strike a crippling blow on the VIII Legion Battle Barge “The Crimson Blade” as it sat in low orbit.

The VIII Legion descended into the underground facility and detonated the magazine as retribution. As the VIII Legion stood on their ships and watched Paracel VII split apart and torn asunder, a tear in realspace birthed not only the III Legion, but a horde of daemonic forces into the region. These daemons fed on the souls of the dying on Paracel VII, growing stronger as they did. Paracel I-III fell in rapid succession and in the dying moments of Paracel VIII; reinforcements from the I, IX and XIX Legions rushed to the defence of Paracel VI.

GAME TABLE & MISSION

The mission was taken from page 151, Book 9: Crusade. This mission is called No Stone Upon Stone. There are four buildings on the table refered to as “Keystone Buildings”. The objective is to take and hold these buildings by the end of the game. Alternatively, you can destroy the buildings. Each building has an armour value of 15, with 7 hull points for this game size. If, by the end of the game (6 turns) you control a building, that side earns 4 Victory Points. If a side destroys a building, then they earn 2 Victory Points and no one can claim the building. A non-keystone building destroyed is worth an additional VP, but we did not play this rule.

For ease, we chose a tile width deployment zone and two tile width “no mans land” instead of the 24″ separation.

Secondary Objectives in effect are Slay the Warlord (for each army warlord) and The Price of Failure.

ARMY LISTS

With the Loyalist side having 3 players and the Traitor side having 2, this saw each player on the Loyalist side fielding 4,500 each to the 6,750 for each Traitor. This balances out when you consider the Loyalists have 3 Primarchs, due to the greater army synergy for the Traitors and the house rules for our group.

DEPLOYMENT

The Loyalists secured the right to deploy first and the Dark Angels placed their Escaton Imperative dice into the central portion of the table. This turns the Difficult Terrain of the central two tiles width into Dangerous Terrain when within 6″ of an Escaton Imperative dice. Due to the Rites of War in the armies, Night Fighting was also in effect.

With both sides deployed, it was time for the Infiltrators to be placed and finally the Daemons of the Ruinstorm portals were placed. The Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Iron Hands deployed in a battle line, allowing the Raven Guard to pulse forwards with their infilrate. The Daemons of the Ruinstorm Portals opened up in between the Loyalists forward lines and the Escaton Imperative Dice. Meanwhile, the Traitors deployed in a virtually null configuration; reliant upon the Daemons, Maru Skara and Drop Pod Assault to provide them the much needed Turn 1 presence.

TURN 1

The Loyalists were going first and began to surge forwards. The Day of Revalation Rite of War saw a Blood Angels Assault Squad find itself in trouble with Dangerous Terrain after a scatter back within 6″ of the Escaton Imperative dice. Their shooting was effective, seeing the Raven Guard Seeker Squad and Deathstorm Drop Pod come down in between the Emperors Children and the Night Lords Javelin Attack Speeders – dropping one from each squadron and forcing both squadrons to Jink. The Iron Hands made contact with the Daemons of the Ruinstorm in combat.

The Traitors launched a scathing counter attack, with the Night Lords dropping in Irulan the Bleak with his Flamestorm cannon in front of the Dark Angels Interemptors and Ravukan the Beast behind the Blood Angels Deredeo. The Daemons emerged from the portal pretty much in their entirety; seeing the Iron Hands flank suddenly blocked by a wave of daemons and the rear quarter of the right flank reinforced by the Daemon Lord and some Lesser Daemons. Opening up the shooting, the jinking Javelins could not draw a bead to the troubling Deredeo. Meanwhile, Irulan the Bleak all but effectively deleted the Interemptor Squad and injured Marduk Sedras in the process. The big win for the Traitors was however, Ravukan the Bleak. Stumbling out of the middle of the pod, he took aim at the rear of the Deredeo and blew straight through its armour – lacking armoured ceramite as it was.

That saw the end of Turn 1, with both sides having caught the taste of blood in the wind.

TURN 2

Turn 2 opened with the Blood Angels outflanking their two Javelin Attack Speeders into the rear of the Night Lords left flank and the Dark Angels Lightning Strike Fighter coming in on the left flank. Finally Corax and a command squad dropped in close to Ravukan the Beast with the aim to eliminate the immediate threat to the rear of the Dark Angels. The Blood Angels Javelins wiped out another Night Lords Javelin, leaving just one on the table – albeit damaged. The Mor Deythan that debussed from a Rhino they’d infiltrated inside of nearly totally wiped out a Terror Squad, forcing them to run back towards their deployment a considerable distance (not helped out by the Nostraman Blood rule!). The Dark Angels Lightning Strike Fighter significantly weakened the Daemons that were preparing to charge into combat with the Blood Angels and Iron Hands. Concerted fire brought down Irulan the Bleak (after he had pretty much earned his points back) and Corax charged into Ravukan the Bleak. He took 2 wounds on the way in, but Corax used his anti-vehicle stats and destroyed him. Things were looking particularly bleak for the Traitors.

Reserve rolls came to the rescue. The Emperors Children Storm Bird and Storm Eagle came in, along with the Night Lords Thunderhawk and Storm Eagle. The Night Lords saw Curze and Hel Zyberis’ claws come in and surround the Raven Guard on the left flank. Meanwhile, the Emperors Children Spartan moved forwards and took aim on the Dark Angels armoured column advancing on the right. The Storm Bird dropped it’s D weapon on Sanguineous, wounding him signficantly. The Thunderhawk fired the Turbolaser at the Lions Spartan, which, not having a Flare Shield took a significant amount of damage – but importantly was not destroyed. The Night Lords Storm Eagle opened up on the Dark Angels Lightning Strike Fighter, bringing it down swiftly and securing air supremacy for the Traitors. The Daemons made contact on the right flank and pushed into the Blood Angels and Raven Guard.

By the end of Turn 2 there was genuine carnage on the go. However, it wasn’t over – the Loyalists held 2 Keystone buildings, with one unclaimed but underneath a Night Lords Dreadclaw loaded with Terror Squad Executioners and the other very much in the hands of the Emperors Children. Moreover, the Raven Guard on the left flank Keystone building were now entirely surrounded by the Night Lords. Turn 3 was about to dial the carnage up to chaos.

TURN 3

Turn 3 saw daylight break. The Blood Angels Javelin Attack Speeders push through to try to position themselves for a strike on the Emperors Children Rhino on the Keystone Building on the Traitors deployment. Effectively, the Dark Angels and Raven Guard reinforced their right flank with the aim of ending the Daemon and Emperors Children presence on that flank. On the left flank, the Deathstorm Drop Pod opened up on Curze and his claw, causing a significant amount of losses of Night Raptors, irrespective of their cover save and the apothecary! The remaining seekers and Breachers attempted to bring down more of the Raptors from Hel Zyberis’ claw; again causing significant losses. The Iron Hands and Blood Angels found themselves still locked in combat with the Daemons on the left flank, though the Blood Angels were looking worse for wear. On the right, the Raven Guard Dark Furies that arrived the previous turn pulled into the Emperors Children and Daemons, causing utter chaos – almost causing the flank to fail single handedly.

The Traitors responded with some utterly disgusting outputs. The Thunderhawk, Storm Bird and Storm Eagles went into hover, unloading their respective cargoes on the left and right flanks. The Thunderhawk opened up on the Lions Spartan, this time popping it, the Sicaran Punisher next to it and forcing the Lion and his Terminators out into Dangerous Terrain. The Storm Bird also unleashed hell, assisting in damaging the forces on the right flank. Meanwhile in the centre the newly disembarked Terror Squad atop the Keystone building fired into the Dark Angels Interemptors and Marduk Sedras – killing them. The remaining Night Lords Javelin destroyed the troublesome Raven Guard Deathstorm Drop Pod. The Contekar came out of the Thunderhawk and killed the Dark Angels Breachers with their Volkite Cavitators, whilst the separated Sevatar eyed the nearby remaining Blood Angels. The Contekar in the Storm Eagle debussed and wiped out the Breachers and the remaining Seekers and Mor Deythan were killed by bolt pistols from the Night Raptors and Curze’s Widowmakers. Finally, the Terror Squad that dropped behind the Keystone building in the Loyalist deployment engaged the rear of the Iron Hands tactical squads, wiping one out. On the right flank, Fulgrim and the Daemon Lord were locked tight in combat with the Dark Angels, Raven Guard and Blood Angels. The Dark Angels Assault Squad were wiped out, but the Emperors Children suffered in combat. The Iron Hands automata were still in a standing fight with the Daemons. Finally, Sevatar charged in on the left flank to the few remaining Blood Angels.

Unfortunately, this is where we ran into our time limit for the day – effectively ending the day.

This saw the Loyalists controlling one Keystone building, giving them four points; and the Traitors controlling three Keystone buildings giving them twelve points. Adding in the Escaton Imperative limitation, this saw the final score 15-4 to the Traitors.

NOT-INSURMOUNTABLE POINTS

Discussions had immediately after were fairly clear on the likely outcomes. Fulgrim and the Daemon Lord were in danger of falling to Sanguineous, who could be reinforced by the Lion and his Terminators. The Contekar and Terror Squads on the Loyalist deployment Keystone building would have to deal with a Land Raider full of Inner Circle Cenobium in the next turn. Not to mention that Corax was due to return to the table and would likely have threatened the Traitor deployment Keystone building. That said, there was still a 10-man Night Raptor Claw and a Fire Raptor to arrive from reserves – which would have been directed to the rear right flank. Additionally, there were enough Contekar and Terror Squads to potentially gun down the Dark Angels at the rear – though it would inevitably have drawn them from the objective and would be unlikely that they would hold it by Turn 6. With Sevatar fighting and looking to continue the fight against the Iron Hands and their Automata, it’s likely the Instant Death in a challenge rule would have begun to clear them out quickly; but also Curze and Hel Zyberis’ claws would be free to move either to reinforce the right or clear the left flank.

All said – we genuinely believe it would end up with the Traitors holding 2 Keystone buildings and potentially taking down Sanguineous and Corax; but with the Loyalists holding 1 Keystone building, and taking down Fulgrim and the Daemon Lord too. That would make it:

Loyalist Estimated Turn 6 Results:

4VP – 1x Keystone Buildings

2VP – 2x Slay the Warlord

4VP – Price of Failure

++ Total 10 VP ++

Traitor Estimated Turn 6 Results :

8VP – 2x Keystone Buildings

2VP – 2x Slay the Warlord

4VP – Price of Failure

++ Total of 14 VP ++

Potentially still a Traitor victory, but one that relies on a single objective being held to win out.

SUMMARY

It was a genuinely amazing game to break back into Heresy with and I thank Ash C, James, Alex and Luke for taking the time to build, paint and play their amazing armies. Additionally, I’d like to thank 4TK Gaming in Colchester; run by Andy and Aydan for the hospitality. Despite the fact the game could not run its full course, it was an exciting and absolutely chaotic game to play. It was never in doubt that both sides could win it, and it was a game driven by the dice rolls turn by turn – keeping it fresh and enjoyable.

Units of the match were:

Emperors Children & Ruinstorm Daemons – the Daemon Lord. Absolutely tanking melee and shots from the Raven Guard, Dark Angels and Blood Angels.

Night Lords – it’s between the Contekar and Ravukan the Beast for their work wiping key targets off the table.

Blood Angels and Iron Hands – the Domitar for simply holding back the tide of Daemons.

Raven Guard – Corax for whacking Ravukan the Beast so resoundingly.

I’m sure, to a 100% certainty that I’ve missed coverage of something in this Battle Report- the table was an absolute maelstrom of activity – and highlights what we need to do as a group to make these more accurate for viewing!

Our next game will be an opener for a campaign – though we will be using c.3,500pts armies to ensure the game can be completed in the day. With that, there’s nothing left but to put the images taken from the game on the blog and begin preparing for the next game!
